Money & Relationship Counseling
Counseling for couples and individuals worn down by fighting about money, hidden debt, or financial betrayal, and unsure whether the relationship can take much more.
What is Money & Relationship Counseling?
Money and relationship counseling, also called financial therapy, is talk-based therapy that addresses the emotional and relational side of money: recurring conflict about spending and saving, financial infidelity such as hidden debt or secret accounts, power and control struggles, and the strain that pushes couples toward separation. The work happens entirely through conversation online. Because money conflict is usually about trust and security rather than cash, the work is based on what is underneath it, without taking sides.
Money and relationship counseling is not financial advising, and Doug is not a financial advisor, accountant, or divorce attorney. He does not manage your money or tell you how to invest it. He helps you understand the conflict, rebuild trust where it broke, and get clear on what you want to do. Some situations need a different kind of help, and he will say so.
Doug Lormand is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an AASECT-certified sex therapist serving adults across Texas, Colorado, and Louisiana.
Does this sound like you?
Money doesn’t destroy relationships, it exposes them. It reveals where trust is broken, power is imbalanced, and emotional safety has disappeared. Many couples describe some version of this:
- You have the same fight about money, over and over, and nothing changes.
- You found out about a debt, an account, or a purchase you did not know about.
- You keep having the same money argument, louder each time.
- You spend, your partner worries, or the other way around, and you both feel unheard.
- You argue about money instead of talking about it.
- You feel controlled by how the money gets handled.
What Money & Relationship Counseling Covers
- Recurring fights about spending, saving, and priorities.
- Financial infidelity, hidden debt, secret accounts, undisclosed spending.
- Debt stress and the strain it puts on the relationship.
- Different money styles, one saver, one spender.
- Power and control struggles around income and decisions.
- Money tension in blended families or after a big life change.
- Deciding whether money problems are something to work through or walk away from.
How We Work Together
We start by getting honest about what the money fight is really about, what each of you is afraid of, what feels unfair, and what you each really want, without me taking a side.
Then we get practical. We work on changing the pattern instead of relitigating the budget, rebuilding trust where something was hidden, and getting clear on the decisions in front of you.
If both of you are in it, there is room for both of you. If only one of you shows up, that is real work too. I am not your financial advisor, and I am not your attorney. I help with the relationship part, and I will tell you straight when something needs a different kind of help.
We’re a good fit if:
You want a therapist who works differently
Not a standing weekly hour. Someone whose whole setup is built around being reachable when the money fight boils over.
You’ve reached your boiling point
The money tension has come to a head, and sitting in a long intake queue is not something you can do right now.
You want movement, not a waiting room
You are ready for a therapist who names the money pattern, asks the hard question, and helps you decide, on your own timeline.
Benefits of Money & Relationship Counseling

Money & Relationship Counseling FAQs
Is this financial advice or financial therapy?
Financial therapy. I am not a financial advisor, accountant, or divorce attorney, and I will not manage your money or build you a budget. I help with the relationship side of money, the conflict, the trust, the decisions. If you need the numbers handled, I will point you toward the right professional.
What is financial infidelity?
It is when one partner hides money from the other, secret debt, a hidden account, undisclosed spending. It tends to land like any other betrayal, because it breaks trust. If the bigger issue is an affair rather than money, see the Infidelity Recovery page.
Can therapy help if money is pushing us toward divorce?
Often, yes. Many couples reach clarity once the money fight stops running the show. Sometimes that means working through it. Sometimes it means deciding to part. I will help you get to a real answer, not push you toward one.
Do you work with individuals, or only couples?
Both. Sometimes both partners come in. Sometimes one person comes to sort out their own side of it. Either is real work.
How soon can I get in?
Fast, on purpose. A money blowup or a discovery about debt does not wait for a weeks-out appointment. Reach out today and you can usually be on the schedule within 24 hours, often the same day.
Can we do this online?
Yes. Sessions are online across Texas, Colorado, and Louisiana, so you can meet from somewhere private. You do need to be physically located in one of those three states.
How much does it cost, and do you take insurance?
Doug offers private-pay sessions and works with select insurance through third-party platforms, depending on what is available for your plan. He can also provide documentation for out-of-network reimbursement when it applies. You will get the specifics when you reach out.
