Individual Counseling

Therapy for people working on a relationship without their partner in the room, and for those trying to understand why relationships keep landing in the same place.

What is Individual Counseling?

This is individual therapy aimed at relationships, not general talk therapy that happens to touch on them. Doug works with you on the patterns you bring into a relationship, or into the search for one, and helps you change them from your side.

The work is structured. Doug assesses what’s driving the pattern, names it, and helps you build a plan you can act on. You don’t need your partner present, and you don’t need to be in a relationship at all.

Doug Lormand, LPC, works with individuals across Texas, Colorado, and Louisiana.

If You Are in a Relationship, Working on It Alone

Sometimes the person who needs to do the work is you, and the other person is not in the room. That happens for a lot of reasons. Some of this might land:

  • You’re carrying something you haven’t told your partner, an affair, financial secrecy, and you need to work through what to do with it before it comes out on its own.
  • Your partner will not come to therapy, so you are doing it on your own.
  • You keep reacting in ways you do not like and cannot seem to stop.
  • You want to change the relationship, but you are the only one willing to start.
  • You are carrying resentment you do not want to take out on the person you love.
  • You need to figure out what you really want before you can ask for it.

If You Are Single and It Keeps Going the Same Way

Being on your own is not the problem you are here to work on. The pattern is. Some of this might land:

  • The relationships end differently but feel the same by the finish.
  • You pick the same kind of person and hope it goes another way.
  • You lose yourself in relationships and are not sure how to stop.
  • You want a partner, but something keeps pulling you back before it gets close.
  • Dating apps have you exhausted, swiping through good options without finding the one that’s actually right, and you’re not sure you’re even approaching it the right way.
  • A life stage is catching up with you, wanting a family, wanting a partner, and time feels like it’s working against you.
  • You are ready to understand your part before the next one starts.

How We Work Together

Doug assesses what’s driving the pattern, names it, and helps you build a plan you can act on from your side, whether that’s inside a relationship your partner isn’t ready to work on, or in how you approach the next one.

The work is structured, not general talk therapy that happens to touch on relationships. You don’t need your partner present, and you don’t need to be in a relationship at all.

We’re a good fit if:

You want to work on a relationship alone

Your partner is not coming, and you are done waiting for them to start.

You keep repeating the same relationship

You want to understand the pattern instead of hoping the next one is different.

You want a direct therapist

You are ready for someone who names what he sees and helps you move on it.

Individual Counseling FAQs

Can I do therapy about my relationship without my partner?

Yes. A lot of Doug’s individual clients are working on a relationship their partner will not come to. You can do real work on your side of it alone.

I am single. Is this still for me?

Yes. If your relationships keep ending up in the same place, individual counseling helps you understand the pattern and change it before the next one starts.

Is this different from couples therapy?

Yes. Couples therapy works with both partners in the room. Individual counseling works with you, on what you bring into a relationship or the search for one.

How long are sessions?

Standard sessions run about an hour. When a situation calls for more time, a hard decision or something that has boiled over, longer appointments are available. The structure stays in place, with room to extend when it matters.

What states does Doug work in?

Doug sees clients located in Texas, Colorado, and Louisiana. All sessions are online, so where you sit during a session is what matters, not a drive to an office.

Does insurance cover this?

Often it does not. Doug works on private pay and provides out-of-network documentation you can submit toward possible reimbursement, plus select insurance through third-party platforms depending on your plan.
